RE: DW wants a new 5er
Funny how people are brand loyal and go by what others have said about the other brands. We own a Ford diesel and no problems as of yet. Brother is a mechanic and he works on all models and even he said that its how its driven, taken care of, and how its used that will usually determine how a vehicle runs. We all agree that all makes and models have lemons so do some homework and get what you want. JMHO

Well you could have a situation like we had. We had our house sold for a little below asking price. We went and found another house and had the closing dates all set on both homes. The new house would close a month before the old house sold which gave us time to move slowly and get things set up the way we wanted them. On the day of the closing on the house we were selling the buyer walked away from the sale without any notice. It wasnt until 5pm the day of the closing that we were told that the house was not sold. Talk about stressfull.
Well the next day we went back to our old house and changed out all the appliances we had left for the seller with the one's that came with the new house that were older.
Then we figured ok..what now..put it back on the market and that same day an agent called to see the house which we had decided to repaint in the living room. Told them sure come on over but we are painting..no problem..house sold that night to the people who came to see it that day.
Now up here in Kitchener Ontario when you sign on the dotted line at closing you MUST be OUT of the home when the keys are turned over to the new buyer.
When we had closing on the new house the keys were turned over to us at noon and told its yours..nobody is in the house as the law states and you can move in when you want. When we came to the house there was furniture and things still there from the other owner. Called the realator and told them to call old oweners and to get their stuff out by 5pm or its all ours. What a mess. All said and done glad thats all over with and that we made out a little better in the end but sure made for one heck of a bad situation.
Ohhh..the reason we found out the other buyer backed out was he found another house in a different town and forfited his deposit which we had to split with his lawyer. If we could have we would have gone after this jerk but in the end it wasnt worth it.

We cross all the time with our 2 dogs into the states from ontario and they will now allow beef and dog food as long as the beef is for personal use. Harder time getting into the usa than into canada so keep passports handy as they do help.

Big Red F-150 Its not the lenght of the fiver ...its the WEIGHT. Not all small fivers are light and not all long fivers are heavy. Our fiver is 31 feet long..and its an ultra light..weight is 8100 lbs GVWR with a pin of 1142 lbs because its a rear kitchen our pin is lower than others.
We owned a Puma 253fbs that was 27 feet long and it weighed GVWR 10,000 lbs and the pin was 1200 lbs. Screaming going up hills is nice but stopping safely with ample space to spare between you and the car in front of you is even better.

When ever we drive by a KOA I cant help but tell my husband, there's another KOA ... (Kiss Our A#$) camggroud and not many people staying there. With all the private campgrounds and state parks if enough people stayed away from the BAD Koa's then someone would notice and things would have to change.
Thats just My Opinion though.
And yes we have stayed at a couple nice Koa's like the one we stay in in Vermont. But if that one changes as its a new KOA then we will look else where to stay.

Half ton Towable Fiver that weighs under 4000lbs with a tongue of 600lbs.
Guess they are making them lighter and smaller now for those who don't want to tow the big rigs anymore. Kinda strange they list it as tongue weight instead of pin but hey its new and maybe they dont know the difference lol.

A new half ton towable

Skip, skip, skip I think you have gotten soft in ur advanced years. Dealers are there to MAKE MONEY!!!!!!! The more the better. They'll tell ya anything to make a sale, even the ability to tow a 38' Montana with a Ford F150. So I don't put much stock in anything a dealer has to say or an association they may be a member of. Anyway we must get together this summer and dicuss this over a beer or six.........

Well I have been up for the past three nights and have thrown this question of licence's around with a number of colleagues at work,and have come up with a new opinion. My previous posts were a mixture of mistaken information from MTO Officers and me not taking my own advise and picking apart the Highway Traffic Act. I think I have now done this and.......
As per the following.....taken from the Ontario Highway Traffic Act
"registered gross weight" means the weight for which a permit has been issued under the Act, the fee for which is based on the weight of the vehicle or combination of vehicles and load;
“gross weight” means the combined weight of vehicle and load;
Class A Class A — any combination of a motor vehicle and towed vehicles where the towed vehicles exceed a total gross weight of 4,600 kilograms, but not a bus carrying passengers
Class D Class D — any motor vehicle exceeding 11,000 kilograms gross weight or registered gross weight, and any combination of a motor vehicle exceeding a total gross weight or registered gross weight of 11,000 kilograms and towed vehicles not exceeding a total gross weight of 4,600 kilograms, but not a bus carrying passengers
Class G Class G — any motor vehicle not exceeding 11,000 kilograms gross weight or registered gross weight and any combination of a motor vehicle not exceeding a total gross weight or registered gross weight of 11,000 kilograms and towed vehicles where the towed vehicles do not exceed a total gross weight of 4,600 kilograms, but not,
(a) a motorcycle or motor assisted bicycle;
(b) a bus carrying passengers; or
(c) an ambulance in the course of providing ambulance service as defined in the Ambulance Act
In my opinion and I'm sure there will be other opinions........
1. A 'G' licence is fine unless the combined weight or combined GVWR of your truck and trailer is under 11,000kgs (IF over then a 'D' licence is required)
2. An'A' or 'A' R licence is required if the gross weight of the trailer is OVER 4600kgs (NOT the GVWR as I had earlier thought and was told)
SO I apologize for any stress or problems I might have caused to you, your marriage, between friends etc. and humbly await the ranting and admonishments
P.S. SKIP lower your blood pressure I think you may be rights as far as the 'A' goes but may be close to a 'D'

I realise that everyone is trying hard to justify not to have to be properly licenced and you go for it. What you don't seem to understand is that you have to read the actual Highway Traffic Act and NOT something put together by someone in the MOT office. Weights on the road, axel weights etc just confuse. So for those that do properly licence themselves good for you..... those that risk the $360 ticket well..... Cause I'm sure that the first long weekend after the 16th of June the OPP will be looking for improperly licenced trailer haulers.
AND Hamops Ya can't double tow with an 'A' R licence....one of the restrictions.

SKIP!!!!!!!!!!!!! You're confusing yourself and everyone else.......Forget about axle weights, tongue weights, pin weights.....even barbell weights. Its very simple if your GVWR is over 4600kgs you NEED an 'A' licence.
Let me put it this way regardless of what the actual weight of your trailer is (unless the manufactor has grossly over or under estimated the weight on the metal plate on your trailer), then the potential for you to weight THAT weight is always there. In which case if its over 4600kgs then you need the 'A' licence. Sorry ta be the bearer of bad news. BUT ya know me ........ stur the pot and stand back ta watch LOLOLOLOL

Spoke to an MTO Officer today as they were weighing Dump truck for over weight. Two questions I wanted answered. 1. Which weight is used for the 4600Kgs to have an 'A' licence 2. medical requirements on an 'A' R licence.
Answers: 1. The GVWR is used and what is stamped on the trailer (Unless the trailer is obviously misweighed then it would be weighed) and 2. Same as the regular 'A'.

RE: Any one using a Ford V10 for TV?
We had a V-10 until a month ago and have now towed with both the Diesel and the V-10. Our last truck was a Ford F250 V-10 with the 4;30 rear and had no problem towing our fiver up hills but it was a gas hog. We did get a respectable 8.7 miles to the gallon when towing and on a good day got about 10.5 without towing.
We decided to look at the diesel's for longevity of the engine and the extra miles per gallon towing and not towing. Even now with the Diesel we are still ahead of the game in miles per gallon towing and not. Just took a trip to see family in NH as we do every year with our fiver. Compared last years gas usage to this years diesel usage and we used 35 gallons less fuel with the diesel. Even with the $1.00 a gallon difference in fuel we still saved money and it was a more comfortable ride not listening to the engine of the V-10 sucking down the gas on hills.
No matter what you get..a V-10 or a diesel you will have the power and the torque to pull your unit without problem. Get what you feel you can afford and what works for YOU. As for us..its now Diesel all the way just for the extra mileage and comfort in the pulling.

butkus21 CONGRATS on your luck in getting a great deal on a unit some of us can only dream about and in the process you helped a friend..what a GREAT thing to do for yourself and your friend who needed a little help in his time of need. Wish others would stop busting your bubble and being so negitive about how you got your new unit..I bet if they had the chance they would have done the same thing and helped a friend in need if they could afford it. If they say otherwise...then shame on them. JMHO

Hey skip good to see you.......the 4600kgs (approx 10,000 lbs)is the GVWR not what the trailer actually weighs. The potential is there.
I don't have a problem doing the test to get an 'A' licence. My problem is, for the ten times I take the 5er out every year I have to pay for a medical. I'm hoping that the MOT in their great wisdom LOLOLOLOL sees this aspect of the 'A' licence requirement, and takes that part out.

We had a problem with our last units walls and like the OP we had lines every 4 feet down the sides of our unit. The Dealer called the manufacturer and they took the unit back and replaced all sides of our unit..Sounds great? Think again. When our unit was returned it looked GREAT on the outside and even the new molding on the inside looked really nice..except for the bedroom area. After sitting in our yard for 2 weeks I came back from a trip only to find that the front cap and sidewalls were pulled away from each other and there was a 1/2 to 1 inch gap between them in the seams on both sides. We now have a different unit because it was told to us that the frame had been damaged some how and we would NOT allow them to fix it we wanted what we sent in to come back to us in better not worse condition. They stood behind their product and we stood behind them seeings how this was our 4th Palomino product and we now have our 5th Palomino with No problems.
Be careful what you wish for. If its cosmetic like ours was you might want to learn to live with it and see what can be done or you could end up with something worse than when you sent it to them.
